Getting started
What is Fluent African?
Fluent African connects families with vetted teachers who run live, online lessons in African languages for children. Every lesson is for one family, so siblings can learn together with a teacher who focuses on them.
How do I get started as a parent?
- Create your account and add each child who will be learning.
- Find a teacher for the language you want and book a free 15-minute meet-and-greet.
- Top up lesson credits, then book 45-minute lessons at times that suit your family.
What is a meet-and-greet?
A free 15-minute video call where your child meets the teacher, you talk about goals, and you both decide whether it is a good fit. Nothing is charged and no credits are used.
Which languages can my child learn?
Languages depend on the teachers currently on the platform. Use Find Teachers to browse by language; if the language you want is not listed yet, contact us and we will let you know when a teacher joins.
Can more than one of my children join the same lesson?
Yes. Every lesson is for one family, and there is no limit on how many of your children can join it. Each child who attends uses one credit from their own wallet, and the teacher is paid for every child present.
Booking and lessons
How does booking work?
Choose a teacher, pick a time and send a request. One credit per child is reserved while the teacher reviews it. The teacher can accept, propose a different time or decline; you are notified in the app and by email at each step, and the credits are returned if the lesson does not go ahead.
How long are lessons?
Lessons are 45 minutes. Meet-and-greets are 15 minutes.
Will I be reminded before a lesson?
Yes. Both you and the teacher receive a reminder an hour before the start and another 30 minutes before, in the app and by email. You can join from the session page a few minutes before the start time.
What do I need for a live lesson?
A laptop, tablet or phone with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection and a quiet spot. Lessons run in your browser from the session page; there is nothing to install.
What happens if the teacher does not show up?
A teacher can start a lesson until its scheduled end time. If it has not started by then, it is cancelled automatically about an hour later and the reserved credits are returned to your children, so you can rebook the same evening. You can also report a problem from the session page and our team will review it.
What if my child cannot attend?
Request a cancellation from the session page as early as you can; the teacher approves it and the reserved credits are returned. If your child is marked absent, the credit returns to their wallet.
What do I receive after a lesson?
After every lesson the teacher writes a recap: what was covered, one to three practice prompts to use at home, and optional notes for each child. It appears in the app and is emailed to you.
Credits, pricing and payments
How does pricing work?
You buy lesson credits in bundles; one credit is one 45-minute lesson for one child. Bigger bundles cost less per lesson, there are no subscriptions and no hidden charges. See the current bundles on the Pricing page.
Which currency am I charged in?
Prices are in US dollars. At checkout we show and charge the amount in your local currency where it is supported; your receipt shows both.
When are credits added to my account?
As soon as your payment is confirmed, usually within a minute. You receive a receipt by email and the credits appear in each child's wallet. If a payment fails or the checkout expires, nothing is charged and we let you know.
Do credits expire?
Credits stay in your child's wallet until they are used. One credit is reserved when you book and returned if the lesson is cancelled or your child is marked absent.
Can I get a refund for unused credits?
Unused, unreserved credits can be refunded at the price you paid for them. Email hello@fluentafrican.com from the address on your account and quote the purchase reference from your receipt.
Where can I see my purchases?
Open Purchases in your account for every top-up, the credits it added and any refunds.
For teachers
How do I become a teacher on Fluent African?
Sign up as a teacher, confirm your email address and complete verification: identity, teaching background and a short introduction video. Our team reviews every submission personally and emails you the decision. Read more on Become a Teacher.
How am I paid?
You are paid for every child who attends a lesson you complete, at the rate in the fee structure you accepted at onboarding. Earnings accrue in your financials and are paid out on a fortnightly cycle to the payout details you add after approval (PayPal, bank transfer or mobile money).
Is there a minimum payout?
Yes. A balance below the payout minimum rolls into the next payout run and is paid once it reaches the minimum. Nothing is lost.
What happens when a family requests a lesson?
You are notified in the app and by email. Accept, propose another time or decline from your bookings within a few days; requests that are not answered in time are cancelled automatically so the family can rebook.
What if I need to cancel a lesson?
Cancel it from your bookings as early as possible; the family is notified and their credits are returned. Repeated late cancellations or no-shows affect your standing on the platform.
Account, emails and support
Which emails will I receive?
Account emails (welcome, email confirmation, password reset), booking updates, lesson reminders, lesson recaps, receipts and, for teachers, payout notices. Every email ends with a link back to this Help Center.
How do I change my email preferences?
Open your profile and use the notification toggles. Booking updates and recaps follow "Email Notifications"; reminders follow "Course Reminders". Receipts, payout notices and account security emails are always sent.
I did not receive an email. What should I check?
Check your spam or promotions folder and add hello@fluentafrican.com to your contacts. Make sure the address on your profile is correct and that the relevant preference is on. If it still does not arrive, contact support with the time and the email you expected.
How do I reset my password?
Use "Forgot password" on the sign-in page. We email you a link to choose a new password; if you signed up with Google, sign in with Google instead.
How is my family's data protected?
Lessons are private to your family, only you can see your children's profiles and progress, and we never store card details on our servers. Read the Privacy Policy and Terms of Use for the full picture.
How do I contact support?
Email hello@fluentafrican.com from the address on your account. Signed-in parents can also use the Feedback page, and teachers the Contact Us page in the teacher portal.
